You can even further your savings by stretching fresh 2% with half powered milk. You won’t notice the difference in taste.
Today’s thrifty living tip is use use recipes from old cookbooks. I prefer to use the ones from the 70’s and before. My favorite one to use is Better Homes and Garden that is dated from the 1960’s. I like it since there are great tips that many people don’t use anymore and I’m not bombarded with name brands. Of course we no longer have to sift our flour, but I find many of the recipes are easy to make and are timeless. Another reason I like them better is they are usually obtained either free from a relative or very cheaply at a yard sale or thrift store. I bought the one I use often for a buck, and it’s still in wonderful condition. I also like that it was made in a binder style so the book stays open and it’s easy for me to read it while cooking. I have also found some really great recipes on the internet. I recently made pizza dough from scratch that was very delicious. My husband and son loved it. My next projects is to experiment with making bread from scratch.
Today’s thrifty tip is plan your meal the night before. I know that many experts want you to make up a 7 day menu, but that’s not realistic for us. Even if I did keep in mind all the activities or other planned events, that wouldn’t take into consideration all the last minute changes. Let’s be honest that things do change at the last minute. I honestly prefer to plan my meal either the night before or first thing in the morning. I thaw out all my meats or frozen leftovers in the sink with cold water by that afternoon. It still gives me plenty of time to cook a nice meal. This is what works for me, and maybe going by a weekly menu works better for you. Another benefit is if the weather is cold, then I know I can make a nice soup or something to warm us up. I don’t like to eat gumbo in the summer and this is the perfect weather for a nice bowl of it.
Today’s thrifty tip is eat less meat. I love meat, but it’s getting very expensive these days. As Americans, we do eat more than we need in a serving. I have been cutting chicken breasts in half, and I get more meals from it. Beans are an excellent source of protein and fiber, and it’s much cheaper. The other great thing is they are versatile. I can use them in soups, serve over brown rice, use them in a stir fry, wrap them up in a tortilla, and more! Eggs are also full of protein, but the whites are better than the yolk. I have made some great meals with eggs. When you do buy meat, try to get the leaner cuts. They have less fat plus taste better.
Today’s thrify tip is cook more meals from scratch. Even with the higher costs of food, it’s cheaper to cook a homemade meal than to eat out. I even started making my own breads instead of buying them at the store. They taste better and are more filling. I plan my menus by the week but some do a monthly plan to save more time. I prefer a weekly basis since I have a better idea of appointments or things that come up during that week. It’s also easier to cook with dietary restrictions in mind.
