Relax This Holiday Season

The holidays are fast approaching with Thanksgiving almost here. Thanksgiving is the signal that Christmas will be here in a month. Oh no! I still have to buy the turkey and trimmings, clean the house for the guests, then start decorating for Christmas, buy the presents, wrap them, and send out cards. Whoa! Slow down and take a deep breath. Do the opposite and take time for yourself this holiday season.

While this tidbit sounds great in theory, didn’t you just see all of the things I still have to do. Believe me I understand, but take your finger off the panic button and relax. I’m going to list a few tips on how to take time for yourself and learn how to relax which will make the holidays even more enjoyable.

Make a Plan:
Everyone needs a plan of action. Make a list of all the items you need to make for Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas dinner. Make a list of all the people you buy presents for or make treats. I realize I’m a little late planning this post as I wanted to write this last week, but this is still useful for Christmas. I always make a list of the people we buy presents for, and I always buy a couple of extra items for those last minute gifts. The plans are also good for cleaning or maybe with traveling.

I realize some of you are probably laughing, but I want you to delegate that list to others. Get your husband involved, the kids (if they are old enough), friends, and other family members. If someone asks if they can bring something for Thanksgiving, then tell them yes. It could be soft drinks or desserts. Maybe they make a wonderful side dish that everyone enjoys. You aren’t superwoman so stop trying to act like one.

Indulge Yourself:
I am very serious. As women we try so hard to please everyone else, that we neglect ourselves. I know I’m not useful to my family if I’m stressed out and snapping at them over trivial things. When I start to feel my breaking point, then I take a deep breathe and lock myself up away from everyone. You don’t have to make a dramatic exit, but just excuse yourself for a few minutes. I realize some moms don’t have as much time to get away, but honestly even five minutes of peace and quiet makes a huge difference in your attitude and well being. Below are some things I like to take time to do for myself.

  • Take a bubble bath. (I have occasionally brought a glass of wine to sip while soaking).
  • Do some reading. (It could be as simple as thumbing through your favorite magazine).
  • Do a craft. (If this truly relaxes you then go for it).
  • Enjoy a glass of wine or beer by yourself. (Maybe a hot cup of tea or hot chocolate instead).
  • Pray or meditate. (I know I feel more at peace after saying a prayer or two).
  • Eat a piece of chocolate. (Seriously I love a piece of dark chocolate and just savoring it).
  • Go for a walk. (This really helps to clear your head).
  • Exercise or dance. (Along the same lines but it really does help to soothe frazzled nerves).
  • Listen to music. (I even do this while taking a hot bubble bath).

I think you get the idea. There are times I just lock myself up in my room for a few minutes. My latest guilty pleasure has been writing. I find it really enjoyable to put my thoughts down on paper. It has proven to be quite therapeutic and relaxing for me. Please take some time for yourself this holiday season. A few minutes to yourself daily can make quite the difference in your attitude.

How to Stretch Your Body Like a Physical Therapist

Knee to Chest

If you’re looking for a physical therapy low back stretch, the knee to chest is a great one. It’s simple to do and needs no equipment!

Simply lay on the floor, pointing your toes upwards towards the ceiling. Bend your right leg at the knee and bring it up towards your chest, lacing your fingers together at the knee and pulling your leg towards you. Hole the position for 15-20 seconds before letting go and moving back to the starting position. 

For best results, you should repeat this stretch three times, alternating legs as you do it. This is a brilliant exercise for stretching the gluteal and lower back muscles, and it’s great for improving flexibility. 

Child’s Pose

You might’ve heard of prayer stretch, which is the same as child’s pose. It’s actually frequently used in yoga, so if you enjoy yoga classes you might already know it! Child’s pose is another great stretch for your lower back muscles. 

To do it, place your hands and knees on the floor, aligning your hands with your shoulders and your knees with your hips. Move your hands out in front of you so that your arms are fully stretched out, keeping your palms on the floor. Gently move your hips back a little as you move your head and chest down to the floor. 

You should feel a stretch along your arms and back. Hold the position for up to 30 seconds before returning the start position. 

Calf Stretch With a Band

Tight calf muscles can lead to a whole host of other issues, including increasing the risk of tearing your Achilles tendon or spraining your ankle. Luckily, calf stretches can help.

This calf stretch uses physical therapy stretch bands, which a good physical therapist will provide for you. If you don’t have a physical therapist, you can also buy the bands online.

To do the stretch, sit on the floor and extend your legs straight in front of you with your feet relaxed. Wrap a band around one foot, placing it at the ball of your foot. Pull the band gently until almost all of your foot has moved up off the floor, leaving just the back of the ball of your foot still touching the ground. Hold it for 30 seconds before repeating on your other calf. 

Don’t stretch your calf too hard. Only pull on the band until you feel a gentle pulling sensation on your calf muscles. If it hurts, stop straight away and check that you’re doing the exercise correctly with a physical therapist. 

Hamstring Stretch

This hamstring stretch in physical therapy is very popular. It can help strengthen your knee and relieve tight muscles in your legs, providing a huge hit of relief. It’s so easy to do, too!

Start by sitting on the floor, putting your legs out straight in front of you with your toes pointing to the ceiling. Then, reach out your arms to your feet, bending at the waist and moving as far as possible. Hold the position for around 20 seconds before relaxing, and then repeat it five times. 

As physical therapy knee stretches go, this is very easy and one that you should get better over time. Don’t push yourself too hard on the first go, your flexibility will improve!

Lying Knee Twist

Here’s another one for your back! The lying knee twist is great for building up strength in your abdomen and the muscles along your spine. It also improves flexibility in your back, helping you move without pain. 

Lay down on your back on the floor, laying with your legs out straight and your arms at your sides. Then, bring your right knee up and place your foot on the floor. Slowly bend that knee over your body, lifting your foot off the floor so that just your toes remain on the ground. 

Your arms should remain at your sides during this stretch, but your other leg should rotate with you in the direction you’re going in. Your lower back will also lift off the floor as you twist to the side. Hold the position for around 20-30 seconds before relaxing, and repeat three times for each side.

Pendulum Swing Stretch

If you’re looking for shoulder physical therapy exercises, this is a great one to help improve motion and relieve pain. All you need is a flat surface to lean your other arm on and you’re good to go!

Start by relaxing your shoulders completely. Lean over slightly at the hip, moving your legs if needed to make the position more comfortable. Place one hand on a hard surface for balance, whilst the other arm hangs down loosely. 

Gently swing your arm in a circle, aiming for a diameter of about one foot. Swing in one direction for 10 circles, before switching to the opposite direction. It’s easy and effective!

During the massage, take the time to remind them to switch which side they’re turned to. That should help avoid any muscle cramps or neck pain post-rubdown. 

When you begin the massage, take the time to warm up the massage oil, perhaps in a bucket of warm waters or just in your hands. Then, take the oil and rub it between your hands to make sure they’re fully coated before contact. This will keep the recipient warm and comfortable during the massage.

7 Tips for Starting Remote Jobs on the Side

We all dream of having the freedom to work when we want and where we want, but did you know that you could easily make that a reality by working from home? 

Over 57-million people in the United States are part of the growing gig economy. This means taking short-term, remote jobs, and working as a freelancer or an independent contractor. 

With the flexibility that this type of work offers, many people are choosing to work in the gig economy alongside their regular career. But how do you manage your workload and life when working as a freelancer?

Here are seven tips for starting remote jobs on the side of your current career. 

1. Build a Support Network 

For many workers, remote working can increase levels of productivity. For many, this increased productivity is because there are fewer distractions from co-workers. For other workers, working from home can be a very isolating experience. 

If you’re working remotely for a big organization, chances are they have something in place to connect with their workforce. This might be a communication tool such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, or Google Hangouts. 

Often, you can use these tools to keep in touch with other workers- even if it’s not entirely work-related. For example, an organization may have Slack channels for work and separate channels for socializing. 

Don’t be afraid to join in on social channels. Build up a network by breaking the ice over memes and cat pictures. 

Having connections with other workers in the same role as you can be very helpful for keeping isolation at bay. 

2. Plan Your Time 

Unlike when you may have worked in a regular career, when you’re working remotely there isn’t likely to be anyone checking up on you and making sure that you’re getting the work done on time. This is especially true if you’re working as a freelancer. 

Without the nine-to-five structure that you’d usually be working, it can be very easy to get off track and lose control of your workload. 

Create a schedule of work. Start each day by writing a to-do list. Make sure you are realistic about how long each task will take you. Prioritize the most important jobs and work down to the least important. 

If there are deadlines for the work, make sure you complete the tasks in the order that they’re needed. If you need to, set alarm clocks and reminders. 

3. Don’t Panic 

When you first start off in a remote job, it can seem exciting and overwhelming all at once. You’ll feel a wide range of emotions around your new career.

Don’t panic. You may feel as though you’re all alone in this situation because there is nobody else working near you. 

You’re not alone. If you’re feeling imposter syndrome, or that you’re not going to be able to do the job, reach out to other remote workers on whatever channel is available. 

Find support from online forums or remote working Facebook groups. 

If you have any genuine concerns or you’re unsure about anything you’ve been asked to do, ask your client or employer. 

Try and remain calm as best as possible. Meditating for a few minutes each day could be helpful to help you with your stress levels. 

4. Update Your Laptop 

Your laptop is about to become your most precious tool. You should do everything possible to make sure it is in an optimal condition at all times. This means carrying out that mac operating system update that you keep putting off doing. 

Make sure that you have good antivirus and firewall protection and carry out regular software updates.

Use cloud-based software wherever possible. That way, if your computer crashes or breaks down, you’ll not lose any of your valuable work. 

5. Stay Focused 

It can be hard to stay focused when you’re working from home. There are likely to be plenty of different things around your home that could potentially distract you. 

Learn to stay focused as much as possible. Be strict with yourself about the time that you spend working and commit to it. 

Work out what distracts you most and remove the temptation from your working space. 

6. Take Breaks

Working on your own can be quite intense. Without the distraction of other people around you, you can be far more productive. However, spending all of your time sat at your desk is not good for you. 

Take breaks from time-to-time even if you’re just walking to another room to fetch a drink. Take a lunch break. Go outside for a walk if you can. 

Taking breaks is essential- as is getting some exercise. 

7. Set Work/ Life Boundaries

Even if you’ve never been a workaholic, it can be easy to slip into a habit whereby you spend all of your time at home working. Without a clear division between your working time and your relaxing time, you could see yourself on a course for burn-out. 

Set clear boundaries about the hours that you are going to spend working and then confine all of your work to those specific hours. 

Having a separate space in your home where you’ll work will also help you to mark out the difference between work and relaxation.  

If you use a work email address on your phone, make sure you set up your email client to only download messages during your set working hours. Don’t be tempted to check your emails when you’re not working- it’s a slippery slope. 

Let those you work with know what hours you plan on working. You can also mute conversations on apps such as Slack so that you’re not reminded about work when you’re off.
